آيَةُ الْمُنافِقِ ثَلاثٌ: اِذا حَدَّثَ كَذِبَ؛ وَاِذا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ؛ وَاِذا ائْتُمِنَ خَانَ

A hypocrite is known by three characteristics: s(he) tells lie, breaks his (her) promise and commits treachery in trusts.

مَثَلُ المُنَافِقِ كَمَثَلِ الشَّاةِ الحَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الغَنَمَيْنَ

A hypocrite is like unto a goat, wandering between two flocks (of sheep).

ثَلاثَةٌ لا يَسْتَخِفُّ بِحَقِّهِمْ اِلاّ مُنافِقٌ: ذُو الشَّيْبَةِ فِي الاِسْلامِ؛ وَذُو العِلْمِ؛ وَاِمامٌ مُقْسِطٌ

A hypocrite is the one who humiliates the learned, just leaders and those who have grown old in their struggles for the cause of Islam.

المُنَافِقُ يَمْلِكُ عَيْنَيْهِ يَبْكِي كَمَا يَشَاءُ

A hypocrite rules over his own eyes, shedding tears as he wishes.

لا يَنْبَغِي لذِي الوَجْهَينِ أنْ يَكُونَ أمِيْنَاً عِنْدَ اللَّهِ

God does not trust in hypocrites.

I am mostly worried about my nation, of glib-tongued hypocrites.

اِحْذَرْ أَنْ يُرَى عَلَيْكَ آثَارُ المُحْسِنِيْنَ؛ وَأَنْتَ تَخْلُوُ مِنْ ذلِكَ فَتُحْشَرَ مَعَ المُرَآئِيْنَ

Let not the signs of the kind appear in you, without yourself being kind; for you’ll be a company to hypocrites (in the Hereafter).

Three traits make man a hypocrite even if he prays and fasts: Betrayal of trust, lying and non-fulfillment of promise
